HOW TO GROW AND CARE MONEY PLANT (epipremnum aurium)

Epipremnum aureum is a species in the arum family Araceae. Originally it was endemic to the island of Moorea from the Society Islands. The plant has a multiple of common names including Golden pothos, Ceylon creeper, Ivy aurum, silver vine, Solomon Islands Ivy, Marbel queen and Taro vine. It is also called Devils’ vine or Devils Ivy because it is almost impossible to kill and stay green even kept in the dark.

It is also commonly known as “Money Plant” in many parts of the Indian Sub continent.

In Temperate regions it is popular house plant with numerous cultivars selected for leaves with white, yellow or light green variegation.

Growth and maintainance of money plant.

You can grow and maintained easily in your home garden by following instructions.

Propagation

1.      Purchase seedlings from nearest nursery or online.

2.      You may propagate by cutting.

3.      Best is to propagate it from cutting.

4.      If you want to propagate by cutting, simply cut stem with shoots tip 5-7 inches long just below the node. Cutting the tips of the growing branches.

5.      You take a cutting that has a node and a small root elevation.


6.      Take cutting in spring using a clean sharp knife.

7.      Wash cutting shoots with dilute broad spectrum fungicide.

8.      Use rooting hormone (IBA) to induce roots in cutting end.

9.      If you have no rooting hormone no problem.

10.  Use potting mix like 45% coco peat + 45 % soil + 5% sand +5% compose.

11.  Now cutting end is deep in rooting powder and transplant in potting medium by making a hole in the centre pot.

12.  Press the potting mix by hand to firm the cutting ends in potting medium and water it gently.

13. 


Now pots are taken under semi shade area till roots well develop.

14.  Rooting will generally occur in 3-4 weeks.


Planting and growing season

15.  You should plant and propagate during any season but best time to propagate in spring seasons.

16.  If you want to grow in a container, choose a container as per size of seedling.

17.  To propagate by cutting use 4-6 inches diameter garden container for developing new seedlings.

18.  You may grow it in growing bag or in a glass container(if you want to grow in water)

19.  Growing containers should have a good draining system with 2-3 holes.

20.  Now place your container where it can receive at least 4- 5hours direct sunlight or partial shade sunlight.

21.  According to Vastu and Fengshui both Money plants should be kept indoors in south east direction of living room or hall.

Light requirement.

22.  Money plants like bright light and thrive outdoors in full sun in Tropical climates.

23.  Money plants best response to partial shade.

24.  It may grow indoors as house plants; they will cope with medium light levels and some degree of shade.

Water frequency

25.  Money plants require good amount of water to thrive.

26.  Keep the soil moist constantly.

27.  In peak summer seasons water the plants twice in a day.

28.  However plants can resist periods of drought.

29.  Keep in mind that water logging in container may infect your roots.

30.  If you grow it in water initially you should be changed water when it gets turbidity. But after settles change water once every week or two.

Fertilizer requirement

31.  To established your young plants use nitrogen rich fertilizer.

32.  Use bone dust one teaspoon every three months.

33.  During spring change 2-3 inches top soil and filled it with fresh potting mix.

Pruning

34.  The best time to do pruning on a money plants is in winter when the plant is dormant.

35.  Snip back stems just in front of a leaf or node to remove length. Cut no more than 1/3 of a stem and snip it at 45 degree angle to promote new growth. 

36.  You will have to prune the plant whenever the stems seem out grown and look untidy.

 

Repotting of plant

 

37.  This is a fast growing plant. It is best to repot once every two years in a large pot.

38.  The best period of repotting is spring.

Pest management

39.  The money plant is not susceptible to diseases.

40.  To maintain it is ad visible to remove old and dead leaves.

41.  Clean leaves with cotton cloth regular interval if possible.

42.  Money plant suffers from discolouring leaves if there is too much water. Give less water during this time.

43.  During extreme summer place it under shade.
